Student Support Provision at SJS
We value high-quality education and a curriculum with personalisation and choice which will allow for the development of the child’s capabilities through education. In line with this we value each individual in the school community and the school environment itself, believing in treating everyone and the environment with respect and dignity. However, it is important to note that not all Capabilities within the community are equalised. As a school, we prioritise equity and aim to address the unique needs of learners, families, and staff, recognising their diverse individual starting points and the distribution of resources within the environment. In line with Dearden's concept of educational growth and the inherent value of education for personal development, we believe that our role is to facilitate the growth of individuals in our care rather than to mould them.
IEP’s
After a successful trial period, student-friendly Individualised Education Programmes (IEPs) were implemented at SJS for the 2023-2024 academic year, specifically designed for all Level of Adjustment (LOA) 3, 4, and 5 students.
Each IEP featured a QR code that linked directly to Book Creator, allowing families and school staff to collaboratively document the students' learning journeys throughout the year. This interactive approach not only engaged students but also fostered a strong partnership between home and school. At the end of the academic year, these digital records were transformed into beautifully printed books, which were presented to the students by the Head of Support in a special ceremony.
Gifted and Talented
Gifted students have the potential to perform at levels significantly beyond what might be expected for their age in any domain. Talented students exhibit distinctly above-average performance relative to their age peers in any domain. Giftedness is multifaceted, can encompass a wide range of abilities and cannot be measured according to a single dimension.
Music Therapy
The lead teacher for Music and Performing Arts is providing music therapy sessions. This has emerged as a powerful tool in supporting learning for students with individual needs.
Through engaging in musical activities, students experience enhanced cognitive development, improved communication skills, and greater emotional regulation.
School Counsellor
At SJS, we are proud to have a full-time school counsellor Ms Dolly on campus who is dedicated to supporting the well-being and growth of our students. The counsellor is readily available to help students navigate challenges, whether academic, social, or emotional, in a safe and confidential environment.
Having a school counsellor is vital in fostering a positive and supportive school atmosphere. They play a key role in helping students build resilience, manage stress, improve communication, and develop problem-solving skills. By addressing individual needs, the counsellor contributes to the overall mental health and academic success of our student community, ensuring every child feels heard, valued, and empowered to thrive.
School Nurse
Nurse Joyce is a vital part of our campus community, always ready to provide care and attention to students' health needs. Whether it's treating minor injuries, managing illnesses, or offering guidance on staying healthy, Nurse Joyce is here to ensure the well-being of every student.
Multilingualism
At SJS we take language acquisition seriously and we work hard to meet our learners' needs. Currently, we offer three language projects as shared below.

Wellbeing
At Sha Tin Junior School, we prioritise the holistic wellbeing of our students. We understand that wellbeing encompasses various dimensions that contribute to their overall health, happiness, and quality of life. That's why we are committed to supporting the whole child, focusing on their physical, emotional, mental, and social wellbeing.
Incorporating wellbeing into our curriculum supported with the learner profile, encourages students to reflect, discuss, and take action on various aspects, such as maintaining a balanced lifestyle and practising mindfulness. We believe that by instilling these values early on, we empower our students to lead fulfilling lives both inside and outside the classroom.
At Sha Tin Junior School, we also place a strong emphasis on neurological wellbeing and safety. We recognise that a nurturing and secure environment is crucial for our students to thrive academically and emotionally. That's why we have made neurological wellbeing and safety one of our primary focuses.
Neurological wellbeing encompasses the overall mental, emotional, and physical health of our students. It underscores the importance of creating an environment that supports their cognitive development, emotional resilience, and social growth.
SJS Learning Environments: Promoting Wellbeing
We have implemented a range of daily structures and activities aimed at fostering the well-being of our students, teachers, and community. Among the highlights of our efforts are the immensely popular Family Yoga sessions, where both parents and children come together to participate and share moments of relaxation and enjoyment. Another notable accomplishment is the students' strong interest in chess, which prompted them to form a student-led club. This has led to exciting competitions, trophy wins, and a clear demonstration of their strategic thinking skills and enthusiasm for the game.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
As an IB school, we have a strong commitment to the IB’s standards, including the purpose standard that states, “Schools implement IB programmes to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” This is in line with both ESF’s mission to “nurture global citizens,” and SJS’s mission to “provide an inclusive environment.” When families enter the admissions process and accept a spot for their child at SJS, they are committing to a shared responsibility to these aims and our school values.
SJS draws its strength and unique identity from the diversity of students, families and faculty that contribute to our community, and we are deeply committed to fostering a sense of belonging for each individual member. We recognise the ongoing work of all community members to reflect on our shared values and commitments and to consider the ways that they bring these to life in their homes, in our school and in our wider environment.
